BENEFITS

ADVANTAGES OF UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP

The following is a list of advantages and benefits that accompany citizenship of the United States when you are naturalized, they include:

  • The Ability to Obtain and Travel with a United States Passport

As a United States passport holder, you hold one of the most powerful passports in the world (pre and hopefully post COVID-19 era). You are able to visit more than 180 countries without the need of a visa and have the ability to seek help from the nearest United States embassy if you are in any trouble.

  • The Ability to Apply for Green Cards for Your Relatives

As a naturalized United States citizen, you will be able to sponsor family members for family-based green cards which could be the path towards their citizenship. You will be able to sponsor your parents, siblings, and any adult children.

  • The Ability to Obtain Federal Governmental Benefits

As a naturalized United States citizen, you will be able to fully access federal benefits programs such as Medicare and Social Security. You will also be able to apply for federal college funding assistance programs as a naturalized citizen.

  • The Ability to Apply for Federal Governmental Jobs

As a naturalized United States citizen, you are afforded the right to apply for federal jobs that are only available to citizens. These jobs often come with competitive pay and benefits when compared to private- sector employment. The security of federal employment is also a highlight for many individuals.

  • The Ability to Vote and Run for Elected Office

As a naturalized United States citizen, you will be legally allowed to vote in state and federal elections. Some cities allow local non- citizen voting, but for the vast majority of elections, you must be a citizen to cast your vote. You will also be allowed to run for political office as a naturalized United States citizen. Citizenship allows you to run in most local, state or federal elections. You won’t be able to run for President of the United States, however, as that post is reserved for United States citizens who gained their citizenship at birth.

  • The Inability of the Federal Government to Deport You to Your Former Country

When you are a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), you face the risk of being deported  to your former country for a variety of reasons, including criminal convictions. If you are naturalized as a United States citizen, then the federal government will not be able to deport you since this is now your legal home country. The only way to be deported after being naturalized as a United States citizen is to be denaturalized. While rare in the past, the federal government has sharply increased the number of denaturalization cases in an effort to put a scare into naturalized citizens.

  • The Automatic Citizenship of Any Newborn Children

Any children you have in the United States are given citizenship by birthright. If you are a naturalized citizen, your newborn children will have the right to United States citizenship even if they are born outside the United States. You will need to apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad after reporting their birth at the nearest United States embassy or consulate.

  • Your Immigration Case Being Complete and Closed

There will be no more green card renewals or the requirement to notify USCIS each time you move. When you become naturalized, you become someone who is free to move about, live, work, and travel as a full-fledged United States citizen.

These are only some of the most common examples of benefits in becoming a naturalized United States citizen. More extreme examples include being stuck in an active war zone. The United States government takes great measures to protect its citizens abroad and will do everything in its power to ensure the safe return of United States citizens stuck in an active war zone. In 2006, the United States government helped thousands of United States citizens (mostly naturalized) to safety from the port of Beirut during a war between Lebanon and Israel. In short, the United States takes great pride in protecting its citizens all over the world. As a naturalized United States citizen, you will be afforded the same level of protection.
